CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY

The landscape concept for the new Creighton University project in downtown Phoenix creates a campus identity that supports and enhances the mission of Creighton University, creates a sustainable landscape that is expressive of itself and mitigates climate for maximum comfort in the outdoor spaces, and the creation of a flexible design that fosters collaboration and accommodates large and small groups.

Central in the north courtyard, adjacent to the ballroom spaces, the focal point is two water features that spill water into a basin, helping to mask the sound of traffic along Central Avenue. A wide-sweeping grand staircase, punctuated with shaded seating throughout its length, connects the courtyard to the roof deck patio. This second-floor patio space features excellent views of the city, lounge furniture and chairs and tables for studying, and trees in raised planters for shade and aesthetics. The South Courtyard design is reflective of the University’s belief in Terra Firma – nature as a pathway to spirituality – with the striations of Arizona color and texture, mounded landscape areas giving the feeling of being immersed in nature, and the grove of trees keeping the temperatures cool, even in the heat of the summer months. One large bioswale separates the main gathering space from the walkways and more intimate spaces are joined together with a large bridge linking the two sides.
