PRESCOTT COLLEGE CAMPUS HOUSING
Prescott College Campus Housing is a two-acre site on the college campus separated by Butte Creek. Enhancing Prescott College’s commitment to the environment and social justice, the landscape plays a prominent role and is integrated into the housing project. A central gathering area with an outdoor fireplace and a community table provides a dynamic center for students to come together, share ideas and experiences in a common area. Through community meetings, the students expressed their desires for outdoor living and convenience; an outdoor equipment washing station for rock climbing, hiking and outdoor gear, a BBQ area as well as permanent and moveable seating. The site’s landscape concept promotes a sustainable way of life. Pedestrian budges traverse the edible planted bioswales connecting the Net Zero units to the outdoor living rooms. Along the bank of the creek, a terraced food forest allows students to cultivate their own food adjacent to their front doors. Passive and active water harvesting was provided to supplement the gardens; however, the landscape is self-supporting and does not require any potable city water.
