The concept for new playground for the ASU preparatory academy located on the Polytechnic campus in Mesa was developed from the project group curriculum on which the school is based. The landscape and hardscape design for the new campus reflects this learning model with many unique features not commonly found in Arizona’s schools. The pre-K and elementary schoolyard features a vegetable garden, a discovery garden and natural play area, and outdoor classroom with chalkboards both for learning and play, rolling hills and tables and benches for individual and small group work. The central spine of the campus is comprised of raised circular benches shaded by multi-trunked mesquite trees surrounded by integrally colored concrete strips that extend into the classrooms. The landscape palette is complimentary to the palette on the Polytechnic campus: desert oasis, with lush, low-water use shrubs and shade trees and bio-swales for collecting and retaining surface run-off.
